How to measure your head for a New Era fitted hat

To find your New Era fitted hat size, wrap a soft tape measure around your head just above your ears and eyebrows, where the cap sits, and match the inches to the 59FIFTY chart below: 22 inches is a size 7, 23 1/2 inches is a 7 1/2, 25 inches is an 8. That is the whole method. The rest of this guide covers what a fitted size means, how to measure without a tape, and what to do if you land between sizes.

What a 59FIFTY size means

A New Era 59FIFTY is a fitted cap: no snap, no strap, one fixed circumference. Sizes run in eighth-inch steps from 6 7/8 to 8, and the number is the hat size, an old hatter's unit that is roughly the head circumference in inches divided by pi. You do not need the maths; you need the chart.

How to measure

  1. Use a soft sewing tape. If you only have string, wrap the string and measure it flat against a ruler.
  2. Place the tape about a finger's width above your ears and across the middle of your forehead, level all the way round. That is where the sweatband of the cap rests.
  3. Pull the tape snug but not tight. Read the number where it meets, in inches or centimetres.
  4. Measure twice. Hair down, the way you will wear the cap.

7 1/4 22 3/4 in 57.7 cm
7 3/8 23 1/8 in 58.7 cm
7 1/2 23 1/2 in 59.6 cm
7 5/8 23 7/8 in 60.6 cm

7 7/8 24 5/8 in 62.5 cm

Between sizes: go up

A fitted cap does not stretch in any useful way; wool and polyester crowns hold their shape, which is the point of a 59FIFTY. If your measurement falls between two sizes, take the larger one. A cap that is an eighth too big sits comfortably; an eighth too small leaves a line on your forehead by lunchtime. Thick hair, or wearing it over a hood, also argues for the larger size.

Checking the fit when it arrives

Put it on with the stickers still attached. The sweatband should sit level, resting on the top of your ears without folding them. You should be able to slide one finger under the band at the back with slight resistance. If the crown lifts off the top of your head or the brim will not sit level, it is too small; if it drops onto your ears or spins with a shake of your head, it is too big.

If the size is wrong

If the size is wrong, request an exchange within 7 days of delivery; size exchanges carry a $15 restocking fee unless the cap arrived defective or incorrect. Keep the stickers on until you are sure. Details are on the Game 7 Online returns page; questions go to cs@game7online.com.

Every fitted cap on Game 7 Online lists only the sizes in stock, so if your size shows, it ships. Orders are processed within 1 to 3 business days (Monday to Friday).
